Large Public School System

Situation

Since a large city's public school system used a paper-based system for reporting student information to its truancy officers, its employees were forced to rely on several hundred page printouts of the data while they were in the field. Although these documents often weighed as much as six pounds, they were out of date almost immediately because each day there were as many as 20,000 changes to the student database.

Action

Nextel assessed the school system's information challenges and brought in one of its partners, a software and Web services company, to design a Java-based application for Nextel's handsets. Using development tools and support from Nextel's Developer program, the partner wrote a J2ME truancy application for the schools. Nextel's National Project office coordinated the necessary engineering and distribution support throughout the project.

Results

Today, the truancy officers have instant access to student information; student safety and attendance have improved; and the school district is saving money through increased truancy officer safety, and lower printing and administration costs.
